Georgians overcome Republican voter suppression

Charles, today is the primary election in Georgia and for once, I have some good news to report!

Despite the efforts of Georgia Republicans to suppress votes, as of the end of Friday, the final day of early in-person voting, nearly 800,000 Georgians had already cast their ballots. This is more than three-times higher than the primary in 2018, and even higher than the primary in 2020, a presidential year.

After the 2020 Presidential election, when Trump lost the state to Biden and Democrats Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff won U.S. Senate seats, state Republicans passed numerous voter suppression measures. They made it harder to vote by enacting stricter ID requirements to cast a ballot by mail, reduced that number drop boxes for absentee ballots, along with moving them inside where they can only be accessed during certain hours, and cut back on Sunday early voting, which was popular among church goers.

This shows once again that hard work can cancel Republican voter suppression. Voting rights organizations across the state have stepped up their efforts to register more voters–in fact, 95% of eligible voters in Georgia are registered–along with educating voters about the new restrictions on voting and turning out every single possible voter they can.
