Dubois : Colorline is the Problem of the 20th Century ; Charles Brown: And now the 21st, Too

In 1903, W.E.B. Du Bois wrote that "the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line- the relation of the darker to the lighter races of men (sic)in Asia and Africa, in America and the islands of the sea." Forty years later Gunnar Myrdal characterized the race problem in the United States as a great dilemma that, if not resolved, threatened the ultimate success of our democratic experiment. Within a decade there had begun a national effort to confront this dilemma. There ensued painful conflict, but also enlightened legislation, courageous leadership, and greater progress than many Americans thought possible (or, in some cases, desirable).

Charles Brown: Notice Dubois is playing on the word "Problem". In those days white intellectuals tended to discuss Negroes as a "Problem."

The Colorline ( from Frederick Douglass's essay, _The Colorline_), was considered more an American than European problem by Dubois and Douglass. . However in the 21st Century in Europe, white supremacist politics are on the rise due to People of Color from ex-colonial nations "coming home to roost", so to speak.

Why did Britain leave the EU ? A but for cause was the EU membership created a leaky border with continental nations with rising Colored populations, no doubt. Why are the Le Pens challenging increasingly in elections ? Why NATO overthrowing the Libyan government ? Why is Israel an imperialist gendarme state established in the region of major ex-colonies ? etc.
