Double-Consciousness of Black Folk -Dubois

Jackie Taylor

Cultural assimilation is the process by which a person or a group's language and/or culture come to resemble those of another group. The term is used both to refer to both individuals and groups, and in the latter case it can refer to either immigrant diasporas or native residents that come to be culturally dominated by another society.

Jackie Taylor : "Assimilation may involve either a quick or gradual change depending on circumstances of the group. Full assimilation occurs when new members of a society become indistinguishable from members of the other group."

Charles Brown http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_consciousness Double consciousness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia en.wikipedia.org Double consciousness is a term coined by W. E. B. Du Bois that refers to his famous theory of African American "double consciousness". The term originally referred to the psychological challenge of reconciling an African heritage with a European upbringing and education.[1]

Charles Brown " After the Egyptian and Indian, the Greek and Roman, the Teuton and Mongolian, the Negro is a sort of seventh son, born with a veil, and gifted with second-sight in this American world,—a world which yields him no true self-consciousness, but only lets him see himself through the revelation of the other world. It is a peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others, of measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity. One ever feels his two-ness,—an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder. 3 The history of the American Negro is the history of this strife,—this longing to attain self-conscious manhood, to merge his double self into a better and truer self. In this merging he wishes neither of the older selves to be lost. He would not Africanize America, for America has too much to teach the world and Africa. He would not bleach his Negro soul in a flood of white Americanism, for he knows that Negro blood has a message for the world. He simply wishes to make it possible for a man to be both a Negro and an American, without being cursed and spit upon by his fellows, without having the doors of Opportunity closed roughly in his face." http://www.bartleby.com/114/1.html I. Charles Brown How many souls (cultures) do Black Folks have ? Two, one Black and one white.

Afrikatheg Nation So has it ever worked? And when? If so

Jackie Taylor Afrikatheg Nation I don't understand your question.

Afrikatheg Nation The civil rights, was an attempt to assimilate those of african descent into American culture through white guilt. After a generation, and a black president, we are arguably worst of than when we got the right to vote in a plutocracy.( Lol) I don't think assimilation worked for us. I'm asking you if you know of it ever working out for any culture or race of people?

Charles Brown On the other hand, having two souls can be an advantage, like being bi-lingual. Obama uses this advantage.

Jackie Taylor Assimilation is what is happening to us right now. It has been working and is working now. We look and act more like them than our own culture. Most of us deny that we even have a culture.

Afrikatheg Nation Working for who Jackie? From Booker t Washington, to Martin Luther King, the bet was on assimilation. As a race, a people, or just simply as descendent of Africa, has assimilation worked to improve our social mobility? And do you know any other group that it has worked for?

Afrikatheg Nation he doesn't have two souls. He is an opportunist. He uses his hue for political advantage when needed. While his political implementations bring about our demise. I.e education and economically. That ain't got nothing to do with a soul or 2

Charles Brown White people only have one soul. Black people have to have a white soul, assimilate , to some extent because otherwise Black people couldn't get jobs, make a living in various ways. So, Black people are all on various combinations and proportions both "Black" and "white"; some more of one than the other and the other way around; some different qualities of Black or white, but combination, assimilation and affirmation , contradictorily combined. Thus, Black people are more dynamic, cultural innovators. Also, Black people are both inside and outside white society at the same time, so in general, Black people have a more objective view of white society, the dominant culture. We are good social scientists of American society. These are intellectual advantages that come from having two souls, the Two Souls of Black Folk and City Slickers.

Charles Brown White people will be sure that Black people will never be able to fully assimilate into white society and population. They think that darker, more so-called Negroid features will come to dominate their pure whiteness. That's why they instituted the one drop rule in America, way back whenever in the 1700's or 1800's. One drop of Negro makes one a Negro. You heard of that right ? smiles. There is a strict limit on how far y'all can assimilate set by The Man. See _The Isis Papers_ on white fear of dark physical features, skin color, facial features, hair texture. This is why Dubois's analysis is so unavoidable and advanced in understanding the American racist categories and dynamics, still, so many years after he wrote it. He was a scientist. Wrote the first scientific sociology text, _The Philadelphia Negro_, first by a person of any color.

Charles Brown The irony is , white people , by segregating Black people from them, force Black people to continually make our own culture. So, we can be sure we still have our own culture. White people, who dominate, wouldn't have it any other way, ha ha.
