Cousins Helen and Russell . One picture is in living room at 2533 Sturtevant , Detroit -between Linwood and Lasalle . Phil was born when we lived there. I went to kindergarten , 1st , 2nd, 3rd grade there at McCullough school; i walked alone up Linwood to school and home; I walked up Linwoood alone "visting" strange neighborhoods at 6 and 7 years old SAFELY ; Mom didnt worry ! <

I played a lot of baseball . i listened on the radio to the game in 1957 the last time the Detroit Lions won the championship . The Corrins lived up the street before they moved to Flint. Dad was working for the Bledsoe law firm , then, then he was hired by Congressman John Dingell - a Firster Negro.

MY SISTER FROM PARADISE , THE WONDER WOMAN BEVERLY ELIZABETH BROWN RUGGIA ! Born in Lansing hospital when we lived in East Lansing when Dad was working for Governor Williams . When she was born , Phil says Dad said ," Betty got a little girl ! , Betty got a little girl ! We lived at 218 River St between Grand River and the Red Ceder River; a few blocks from Michigan State Spartans football stadium . Bay windows. i went to Bailey School for 4th and 5th grade ; walked to school many blocks. Played baseball and football ; tackle football without pads ! ; cracked one of my front teeth . Didnt exactly know what a Negro was , nor that i was one ( smiles ) Dad and Mom were , of course , very active in Democratic Party political campaigns because Charlie was an aid to Governor Williams .Mom was a Campaign Scheduler . We continued as political activists, door-to-door campaigners in many elections and avid News followers for the rest of our lives with a highpoint campaigning for Obama decades later . Phil and my main career jobs were for Detroit Mayor Young ( Phil , appointee ; and Detroit Law Department ) ; and City Council ? both of us) <

My father's first cousin , Lawrence Brown , played trombone in Duke Ellington's Band . I played trombone in 7th and 8th grade at Chrysler school in Lafayette Park; and baritone bugle in military school Drum and Bugle Corps; baritone bugle has same size mouthpiece as trombone Lawrence's father was Papa Russell's brother, and also an African Methodist Episcipol minister. Hallelujah ! ; in Los Angeles . I listened to a lot of Duke Ellington records growing up ; more jazz and classical than rock or soul . We had records . <
