Transposable elements (TEs), or "jumping genes," are DNA sequences that can change their position within a genome.
Major Classes of TEs
• Class I (Retrotransposons): Move via a copy-and-paste mechanism using an RNA intermediate and the enzyme reverse transcriptase. Examples include LINEs and SINEs (such as Alu elements).
• Class II (DNA Transposons): Move via a cut-and-paste mechanism directly as DNA, using the enzyme transposase. They were first discovered in maize by Barbara McClintock.
