Charles : People are only one sex or the other. That is an iron law of biology , Jean . That so many adults on the left don't know this is an unacceptable level of ignorance in our population constituting a danger to the public health and welfare. We need mass sex education programs for adults.

If one doesn't understand sex, one canNOT understand gender , because genders are cultural categories that are based in sex; gender is both biologically and culturally ( socially ) determined.

No I am espousing science. I am an anthropology professor . This whole issue falls within the discipline of anthropology ; both sex and gender. Humans are the only species with gender . That is a fact discovered by anthropological science . My specialty geographical area in graduate school was North American Indians. I've known about third genders in Native culture for 45 years. They are not a third sex; they are a third gender. Even gender is logically built on a basic binary analogized to the sex binary. But gender logic can generate third terms out of the basic two . It does not "deconstruct" the basic binary , though. The basic two genders still exist.
