Good morning reader, In the month after a gunman killed four students at Oxford High School, 133 students were accused of making similar threats. Prosecutors say most of the students charged turned out to be middle-schoolers looking to get out of class and posed no real threat. Seven months later, Bridge could not find a single case in which a student received time behind bars. The students’ actions – impulsive and reckless – pose a challenge to schools, police and the justice system. In other policy news, staffing shortages in Michigan prisons are leading to burnout and potential security concerns. Can a 5 percent pay raise solve the problem? The embattled Grand Rapids Police Department faces discrimination charges from the Michigan Civil Rights Commission. And in happier – or at least tipsier – news, wineries along the Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas learned to reshape their business during the pandemic. The result: fewer rooms packed with tourists, but a grander, higher-quality and more personal experience for loyal customers, and their own staffs.
