The Minimum Wage is a Gender Issue, Fellas

 Recently, I have reported on McDonald's 99%'ers protesting their low pay.  This Mothers' Month at Labor Power Blog, we ask "are women a larger part of low income Americans than men ?"  Are women a disproportionate fraction of low income and minimum wage workers?

In 2012, the poverty rates by gender were
  • 13.6% for males 
  • 16.3% for females
 
 
The gender distribution of people in poverty was
  • 44% of people in poverty were males; males accounted for 49% of the total population
  • 56% of people in poverty were females; females accounted for 51% of the total population
