das Indigenous knoledge in Aboriginal Land Recovery "
by Charles D. Brown

Ihis paper argUes for return to primary (primitive) culture.
both Australian and Anerican Aboriginals have focussed on land recovery as a way of liberating and reviving their cultures. Thus,
I develop the argument for use in Aboriginal Land Recorery.
Ethnology has discovered that "primitive" or primary cultures put people before things: that is, they givenimportance to ordering relations besieen peorie than to ordering things as compared with western
Cirilization. Prinary cultures are stateless societies as weil. Thes

and this is perhaps my most unusual claim,, primary cultures are more
fit for survival stratest, in the Darwinian or evolutionary sense, than
civilization, at least based on the best evidence so far,
Iron all of the above, I conclude that prizary culture is siritually and raterially superior to civilization. What is the

• A fundamental and well accepted fact of anthropology 1s
that hono sapiens sapiens came to be at least 34,000 years ago (e-g-Lasker 1976 p304). Of course Neanderthals are the same species, and
go back much further. It is a well established fact of archaeology that no state came about before about 6,000 years ago (Kottak 1974 p 213) - Therefore, it is assumed that most of human
existence time wise
has been in stateless societies. Stateless societies have existed for 34, 000 years or more. Now states are on the
verge of nuclear
holocaust.
On this evidence
, which type of society is nore fit in the
Darwinian sense? Stateless, primary cultural societiesare.
It is this reasoning on species and state origins which may give this paper some originality. There are other truths which I think are important secrets of anthropology and liarxism which are corroborative evidence for ny audacious conclusion that primary culture is fittest.
These secrets fit well with the 34,000 - 6,000 figures and so I am glad to display then here, but they have alreddy been seen as implying my conclusion. As Alfonso Ortiz says, Western science is preoccupied with time.
Well
these figures, 34,000 years and 6,000years are bold enough for an elementary school child to grasp. Certainly they are fundamental to any
