Sex Matters supporters signed… Our petition closed last night with a total of 109,462 signatures. Thank you to everyone who made this happen. Those who signed and promoted the petition included athletes, broadcasters, actors and artists (plus JK Rowling!), as well as thousands of women and men who know that sex matters in day-to-day life, for themselves, their families and their friends. Local petition champions sent the petition to their networks and Women’s Rights Network groups took to the streets to gather signatures. WRN stall, also with dinosaur The government listened There will now be a debate in Parliament about making the Equality Act clear. But even before we have had the debate, the Minister for Women and Equalities, Kemi Badenoch, has written to the Equality and Human Rights Commission asking for advice. Kishwer Falkner, the chair of the commission, published a 19-page letter in response which recognised the tension between the “the rights of trans women and of biological women” and said that human-rights law may require the statutory recognition of biological sex, for example in the enjoyment of separate-sex and single-sex spaces and in sporting activities. Let’s write to Kishwer Falkner Kishwer Falkner and the EHRC took a brave and important step in recognising that the Equality Act should be clarified. We wrote to thank her. It would be great if her office could fill up with thank-you cards to show how important this is. Edinburgh! We promised to host an event in the constituency with the most signatures. In the end there was no competition about what city that would be – the top five constituencies were all in Edinburgh. We have booked a nice big venue in central Edinburgh for the evening of Friday 16th June – SAVE THE DATE. Graph showing five Edinburgh constituencies with vote count We will be working to build political momentum to support the amendment.
