The
John Birch Society does influence many right wingers. When I was doing
research for my book -- I called the national headquarters in Appleton,
WI -- a very helpful research assistant sent me lots of materials which I
put to good use in Wrapped in the Flag.
She told me that the Society has had the largest growth in its history since Barack Obama's first campaign.
Let's be clear about what's happening here. Today’s radical right has re-packaged old John Birch Society conspiracy theories, paranoia, hate and fear and wrapped the whole mess in phony Christianity. Armed with this snake oil, they’ve taken over most of the Republican party and 60% of the states. Extremism has gone mainstream.

n The
concrete question for we anti-fascists is why are the sections of the
bourgeoisie represented by the tea party, which now dominates the
Republican Party, so desperate such that they are acting wildly,
irrationally ? For some reason , the current crisis of imperialism
scares them a lot even without much more than a whisper of a socialist
or communist movement, or even a Soviet Union in the world. They are
telling us something about the potential for revolutionary
transformation in this period. Me thinks the bourgeoisie doeth protest
too much, Waistline.
