Campaign success: UK government to step in on Scotland gender self-ID law

As you may have heard, the UK government has decided to challenge the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill from going to royal assent.

This happened in no small part because of all the campaign groups that have been urging the UK government to act, and providing analysis of the law and the impacts of the Bill.

Thank you to everyone who emailed their MP last week. We know that these letters made a difference. We also know our briefing on the Bill and its implications for the UK was read in Whitehall.

We applaud this government for refusing to be being bullied by Stonewall, and we look forward to reading the contents of the Section 35 order. If you are on social media, now would be a good time to show your support for this intervention by the Scottish Secretary by tweeting #WeBackAlisterJack.

We are not out of the woods yet on this. The Scottish Government is likely to bring a judicial review of the Section 35 order. But court cases bring sunlight and we will do whatever we can to support the case against the GRR Bill with evidence. We will also continue to scrutinise the UK government, and to call for it to clarify the relationship between the Equality Act and the Gender Recognition Act 2004 (GRA).

We think that the government in Westminster should take action to stop the GRA from damaging the sex-based protections laid out in the Equality Act for the whole of Great Britain. We think it is important to do this as well as blocking self-ID in Scotland, as there are other issues, in particular freedom of speech, where a UK-wide approach to protecting human rights is needed.

We hope you feel proud tonight. Love Maya, Helen, Naomi and all the Sex Matters Team.
