Dear signatory,
So Fasrus has had the brilliant idea of doing a Berns Supper in the breakout rooms on Saturday 28th January at 7 pm UK time.
If anyone is interested in taking part, there will be a planning meeting in the BO rooms next Saturday, 21 January, at 6 pm UK time. (Each of the poems and speeches will need a volunteer, as well as the role of MC.)
These are women-only events.
Info
For those that don't know, Robert (Rabbie) Burns is the national poet of Scotland and it is a tradition to celebrate on his birthday - 25th Jan - each year with a Burns supper. So has suggested we repurpose it to celebrate our own icon, Magdalene Berns and created a template for how this might be done, if you'd like to have a look and get the creative and digestive juices flowing.
Traditional Burns Night
Burns Night is a dinner with set speeches and Burns poems, all of which can easily be revised to serve our own celebration, as you'll see from a brief outline of the night. (With apologies to the Scots amongst you for this simplistic rendition of a Burns supper)
The Selkirk Grace
The Haggis is then piped in! (Carried ceremoniously into the room accompanied by bagpipes.)
Address to a Haggis (which is exactly what is says - a poem recited to the haggis, praising its gloriousness!)
Meal (traditional Menu below)
(the idea would be that everyone brings their own supper so we can all eat together.)
The speeches take place after the meal, quote liberally from Burns' work and are all accompanied (as is the meal) by lashings of whisky - or whatever your preferred drink is of course! They are:
The Immortal Memory - in which someone makes a 'witty but spell-binding' oration on the life of Burns, talking about his good and not so good points, (everything from his poetic genius to his love of Scotland to his womanising). It concludes with a heart-felt toast: To the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns!
Toast to the Lassies
(normally given by a man) which is designed to praise the role of women in the world today. Can include amusing anecdotes about women present as well as selective quotations from Burns and should build towards a positive note. The toast concludes: To the Lassies!
Reply to the Toast to the Lassies
An opportunity for the women to get their revenge. Telling stories about the men present. Toast is 'To the Laddies!"
Evening finishes with anyone who wants performing some of Burns' work and finally the song
Auld Lang Syne. Many of you will already know that For Women Scotland has written some fabulous alternative words to this which of course will be a perfect ending.
Typical Burns Night Menu
Soup (eg cock-a-leekie)
Haggis, neeps (turnips) and tatties (potatoes) - all cheap Scottish food served with a whisky sauce
Dessert, typically Cranachan (oats, cream and raspberries) Other options available.
The WDI Book.
The editorial team are looking for a volunteer who has Indesign experience and software, who could help with the book over the next 2or 3 months. If you are interested in getting involved, please email Sally Wainwright at wdisurvey2022@gmail.com
