Good morning reader
It’s Stephen Henderson, back with the second BridgeDetroit Week in Review.

Each year I spend this week in New York, one of several cities - including Detroit - where Trump administration immigration policies made headlines. As the clashes between protesters and immigration officers flared in New York, the focus in Detroit turned to complaints that undocumented immigrants are being arrested outside courtrooms as soon as their hearings are concluded.
Our Malachi Barrett teamed with Outlier Media’s Koby Levin to report. And Koby followed up with a look at how the Trump administration uses expedited removal to fast-track deportations without court hearings.
Barrett’s Detroit city council notebook also noted concerns raised by council member Gabriela Santiago-Romero about whether designating Detroit a “sanctuary city” would draw more immigration attention from federal agencies.
In other news, Detroit’s land-use and access issues got some interesting attention this week in the form of this story, from our Jena Brooker, which raises questions about how the Detroit Land Bank prices parcels for sale. An indigenous group asked about buying a lot, and saw the cost jump from $7,000 to $136,500 after their inquiry. Story here.
Thirty years ago, I was an education reporter for the Detroit Free Press, covering the Detroit school board. One of the members back then was Irma Clark-Coleman, whom I remember as a passionate, even fiery advocate for the city’s students and a voice for reform of the troubled school system.
She died this week at age 88. Nushrat Rahman had the story.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Tell us about your experiences with the Detroit Land Bank. Has it helped with vacant property use or upkeep in your neighborhood? Has it hurt? What would you change about the land bank if you could? Tell us at bridgedetroit@bridgedetroit.com
DETROIT NEXT
Our podcast about the upcoming elections in Detroit featured an interview with former police chief James Craig, the only Republican in the race for mayor, who is touting his relationship with President Donald Trump as a reason could deliver for city residents. Malachi Barrett and I sat down with Craig a few weeks ago. Listen here.
Keep up with all the election information and get the resources you need on our website.
CALENDAR OF EVENTS
Last night, BridgeDetroit held a Meet the Candidates event at Eastside Community Network. About 60 residents attended to hear District 4 City Council incumbent Latisha Johnson and three At-Large candidates - James Harris, community relations chief of the Detroit Fire Department; Shakira Hawkins, an attorney; and Valerie Parker, an education activist and precinct delegate - share their reasons for running and how they’d fairly represent all Detroiters. Engaging youth in civic life, climate change solutions and development in the neighborhoods were also discussed.
Want to be part of the process? There are plenty of opportunities left to engage with the people who want to represent you. Join us in District 5 on Wednesday night. So far 70 people have rsvped and we’re expecting all seven candidates to attend. We’ll have good conversations on the issues facing Detroiters and share a meal. Get the details and RSVP here.
We’re also planning a mayoral forum with the Detroit Parks Coalition on July 24 at the Palmer Park Bandshell (yes, it’s open now and we’re going to be the first big event there!) Ask your questions ahead of time by submitting them here.
BridgeDetroit has a busy summer ahead with projects, events and plenty of news and information. This is our mission. Even though we keep everything free, we cannot do this without support. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to our nonpartisan, nonprofit newsroom.
Have a great weekend!
