Black Liberation is Central to US Working Class Struggle

Subject: For Black History Month

Comrade ,

The below from the 1975 CPUSA National Convention is 100% valid for US Marxists today . White supremacy harms _white_ workers , not just workers of Color ; it lowers all wages ( see the late Comrade economist Victor Perlo’s books on racist super-profits; https://www.amazon.com/Economics-Racism-Ii-U-Inequality/dp/0717806979/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1644171550&refinements=p_27%3AVictor.+Perlo&s=books&sr=1-1 ) . More importantly, It critically divides the working class preventing it from uniting ( workers of all countries and races , unite !) , and winning the class struggle ( See Comrade Gus Hall’s _Racism : The Nation’s Most Dangerous Pollutant_).

This harm to white workers by their own racism is center stage today in the tens of millions of workers who in their racism vote for the white supremacist Republican Party that then passes anti-working class laws and blocks pro-working class laws . This has been dominant in US politics since the election of the racist Ronald Reagan , who aggravated the Nixonian racist Republican Party Southern Strategy (https://www.history.com/topics/1960s/ask-steve-southern-strategy-video ; https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/sep/05/donald-trump-richard-nixon-southern-strategy )

Today’s Left current which reduces the struggle against white supremacy to a so-called identity movement is racist and fundamentally anti-working class .

Solidarity !

Charles

From “Toward Peace , Freedom and Socialism” Main Political Resolution 21st National Convention, Communist Party, U.S.A., 1975

The Black Liberation Movement A unique feature of US capitalism is the extent to which, in addition to its basic system of class exploitation, it has spun a web of special systems of racial and national oppression and exploitation. The purpose of these is to squeeze out corporate super profits. Over 40 million people are victims of the special systems each with a special features. Their keystone is the white supremacist suppression of the 25 million Black Americans, hence, the struggle for Black liberation is a central factor in all struggles for social progress in this country. It is the cornerstone of the struggle against all forms of racial and national oppression.

Most of the 40 million are workers in basic industries, and manufacturing and agriculture . This fact presents a special task for the working class, for the antimonopoly movement, for the progressive movement and for our Party.

It is not only the Black and other minority people who are the victims of racial and national oppression. _White people are also it’s victims, economically socially , morally_ ( emphasis added -CB) . Only the monopoly corporations profit from it at the expense of all the people.

Racism , by lowering the wages of Black workers, also results in lowering those of white workers. Racism, which compels Black people to live in grossly substandard ghetto housing and astronomical rents, also leads to deterioration of housing and skyrocketing of rents , also leads to deterioration of housing and skyrocketing of rents for white working people. Racism, which has brought about the utter deterioration of education in the ghettos, is giving rise to the destruction of the entire public school system throughout the country and so it goes with every aspect of life. To all this must be added the morally corrupting effect of white supremacy on whites, a process which begins in the earliest grades of school and which has placed a hideous moral blot on the white population of our country .

So long as white working people can be made to believe that the interests of Black people are opposed to their own, they will continue to pay the price of racism — that of their own increasing exploitation and the growing deterioration of their own conditions of life. And so long as they fail to see the Black and white workers have a common interest against a common enemy, against whom they must unite , so long therefore as they do not fight against national racial oppression, they will be unable to make any serious advances in the field in the fight for their own interests. The working class cannot unite ranks without taking the lead in the struggle against racial and national oppression. There can be no victorious antimonopoly movements or struggles without a fight against the racist policies of the monopolies. There can be no successful struggle against reaction and fascism unless there is a struggle against the racism that divides the ranks of the forces which must be mobilized against reaction. There could be no successful fight for Socialism unless there is a struggle the burn out these this pervasive ideological influence that diverts , divides and confuses the forces of for Socialism. What must be brought home to white masses and particularly to the white workers therefore —- concretely, graphically , convincingly — is that racism is _their_ enemy , that it can destroy _them_. This is the central task.
